Did you know that drinking water can help you live longer? It sounds crazy, but it’s true! Water makes up 55 to 75 percent of your body weight, and plays an important role in your body's functions. Water helps transport nutrients and oxygen to cells, remove waste products from cells, regulate body temperature, lubricate joints and keep eyes clear so you can see well. Without water, you wouldn’t be able to survive more than a few days! The average person needs between 6 and 8 cups of water per day to keep their bodies properly hydrated.


1) It Reduces Fat


One study revealed that drinking eight glasses of water a day may reduce fat around your abdomen. The experiment involved 14 men, who followed a reduced-calorie diet (1,500 calories per day) for one week. They were then instructed to drink two cups of water before each meal and two cups immediately after each meal. After three weeks, results showed that participants had lost an average of 11 pounds from their water-only diet.


2) Improves Brain Power


Drinking water improves brain power and memory. In fact, studies have shown that students who drink more water do better on tests than their less-hydrated peers. If you’re having trouble concentrating, try downing a glass of H2O before hitting your books.


3) Keeps Teeth Healthy


Your saliva is constantly breaking down food. When you don’t drink enough water, your mouth doesn’t have as much saliva and therefore can’t break down food quite as well. This leads to an increase in tooth decay and an increased risk for gum disease. Brush your teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste and drink plenty of water. Limit sugary foods, like candy or soda that further feed bad bacteria in your mouth, causing cavities and bad breath.

When your body is dehydrated, your blood becomes more concentrated and thicker. It takes longer for blood to get nutrients, like water and glucose, through your system. In addition, certain enzymes in your stomach need water to do their job properly. If you don’t have enough water in your stomach, then those important enzymes can’t function properly which can lead to digestive issues.

Drinking water provides more benefits than just hydration. Our bodies are made up mostly of water, so we must consume enough daily. Those who drink at least eight glasses of water a day tend to have healthier skin and nails since their skin is better hydrated. That will make you look younger as well! This boosts your metabolism, which means you burn more calories even when you’re just sitting around. One study found people who drank two cups of water right before lunch and dinner lost an average of five pounds over three months!

This is important because many beauty products have an alkaline component and these can damage your hair and scalp over time. By keeping your scalp’s acidity level in check, you will be less likely to experience hair loss or dry, flaky skin on your head. (We should note that there are many different causes of hair loss, and drinking water is not going to prevent everything.)

In a Harvard Medical School study, researchers found that dieters who drank two cups of water right before meals lost almost twice as much weight as dieters who didn’t increase their water intake. The reason? Our bodies burn about 30% more calories working to process food when we’re dehydrated, making us better able to digest and utilize it and preventing unhealthy spikes in blood sugar. Need one more reason?


9) Helps with Menstrual Cramps


Even though it’s recommended for menstruating women, many don’t realize that water can help ease discomfort caused by menstrual cramps. If you’re having cramps that make you double over in pain, try drinking a glass of ice-cold water. This can help alleviate discomfort and help reduce symptoms.

A good weight-loss trick is to drink more water. It fills you up, making you feel fuller sooner—so you eat less! A study from The Obesity Society found that people who increased their water intake by 1.5 liters a day for three months dropped an average of nearly 4 pounds.
